BWC uses National Provider Identifier
BWC encourages providers to incorporate their National Provider Identifier (NPI) into the BWC billing process and accepts bills from providers
that have registered their NPI with BWC. However, we do not view NPI as a replacement for the BWC provider numbers already assigned. We will accept bills containing:
- BWC legacy (current) numbers;
- BWC legacy and NPI number;
- BWC registered NPI number.
Registering NPI with BWC
Providers wishing to incorporate NPI into their workers' compensation billing must provide and verify their information with
BWC's provider relations department. Providers should submit copies of their NPI confirmation from the enumerator (Fox Systems Inc.)
along with their corresponding BWC provider number to the fax number or address below.

Allow up to six weeks for the NPI to be registered at BWC. Please contact BWC's provider contact center at the number noted below
to verify your NPI is registered prior to using it for billing purposes. Once this process is complete, a provider may bill using
either his or her BWC provider number or the registered NPI (and taxonomy code).
Additional information
Any provider still needing to obtain an NPI may do here.
Please be aware that BWC can only accommodate NPIs on billing forms (See Chapter 4 of BWC's
Billing and Reimbursement Manual for billing instructions.). We're looking
to accommodate future use of the NPI on other medical documents, but we're not set up to do so at this time. BWC has instructed
managed care organizations to identify medical providers using the NPI on any form
other than a bill, attempt to cross-reference their information, and then inform the provider to use its BWC provider number until
we can accommodate NPI in other processes.
You may direct questions about submitting NPI information or verify your NPI registration by calling 1-800-644-6292 weekdays
between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. When you call, listen to the options to reach BWC's provider contact center.
